Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated rooftop cities. Singapore gets the headlines and Bangkok gets the volume, but KL has something neither of them does: the Petronas Twin Towers framed at eye level from a dozen different angles, plus the newer Merdeka 118 reshaping the skyline. The best KL rooftops put you face-to-face with these icons in a way that's almost theatrical.
The other thing KL has going for it: the prices. A cocktail at a top-tier KL rooftop runs about half what you'd pay at the equivalent venue in Singapore. The weather is reliable year-round (warm nights, occasional thunderstorms that pass quickly), and the scene mixes old-school hotel skybars with a wave of newer, design-driven rooftops in the Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit areas.
We've worked through every venue in our Kuala Lumpur directory — 30 of them — and ranked the 12 that earn the trip up.
01SkyBar at Traders Hotel — the iconic Petronas view
KLCC · Traders Hotel · 33rd floor
If there's one rooftop in Kuala Lumpur every visitor ends up at, it's SkyBar. The reason is simple: from the 33rd floor of Traders Hotel you look directly across at the Petronas Twin Towers, perfectly framed. The pool sits in the middle of the bar, the cabana seats by the window are the seats everyone wants, and the towers light up at exactly the right time of evening to make every photo land. With 4.2 stars across more than 3,000 reviews, it's been the city's signature rooftop for years for good reason.
02Sky Deck KL Tower — the highest in the city
Bukit Nanas · Menara KL · Observation deck
Perched on KL Tower at over 300 metres, Sky Deck is the highest rooftop experience in the city — higher even than Petronas. From up here you look down at the Twin Towers, which is a perspective most rooftops can't give you. It's more observation deck than nightclub, but with a 4.6 rating across nearly 5,700 reviews, it's also one of the most-loved spots in the entire KL list. Best at sunset, when the city goes from gold to neon in about twenty minutes.
03Marquis Sky Lounge — the date-night pick
KLCC · Gtower · Level 29
Marquis sits on top of Gtower with a clean view of the Petronas Towers and a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than the bigger hotel rooftops. The cocktail program is one of the more thoughtful in town, the lighting is dim in exactly the right way, and the space is small enough that you can actually have a conversation. 4.7 stars across 1,100 reviews. If you're choosing between Marquis and SkyBar for a date, choose Marquis.
04Canopy Lounge Rooftop Bar KL — the crowd favorite
Kampung Baru
Canopy is the rooftop that locals actually go to. It's perched on Jalan Mayang in Kampung Baru with a wide view of the KLCC skyline, and at 4.7 stars across more than 6,000 reviews — the highest-volume rooftop in our entire KL list — it has the kind of consistent popularity that comes from getting the basics right. Solid drinks, good food, atmosphere that works equally well for a date, a group, or a Tuesday night out.
05Scarlet's Rooftop — the special-occasion spot
Chow Kit
Scarlet's sits on top of a Chow Kit shophouse and has quietly become the rooftop people book when they want to mark something — birthday, anniversary, work celebration. The space is dramatic, the food is a step up from typical rooftop fare, and at 4.8 stars across 1,500 reviews it's one of the highest-rated rooftops on this list. Less about the famous skyline shot, more about the room itself.
06Cielo Rooftop Dining and Lounge — the well-rounded pick
Bukit Ceylon · VIDA · Level 23
Cielo sits in Bukit Ceylon, a quieter pocket between KLCC and Bukit Bintang, and gets the balance right: solid food, good cocktails, a wide view of the Petronas Towers, and an atmosphere that doesn't try too hard. 4.6 stars across 1,200 reviews. If SkyBar feels too touristy and Scarlet's feels too special-occasion, Cielo is the middle path.
07Mantra Rooftop Bar and Lounge — the Bangsar option
Bangsar Village II
Bangsar is KL's most relaxed neighbourhood, and Mantra is its signature rooftop. You don't get the KLCC skyline up close from here — instead you get an open, breathable view across South KL with the towers in the distance. The crowd is more local-expat than tourist, the music is good without being aggressive, and it's the rooftop you go to when you want a long evening rather than a quick photo. 4.5 stars across 1,400 reviews.
08Hallaway KL Rooftop Bar — the underrated favourite
Chan Sow Lin · Wisma Trax · Level 13
Hallaway is one of the most-reviewed rooftops in KL (3,500+ reviews) but flies below the radar of most tourist guides. That's because it's south of the centre in Chan Sow Lin — a slight detour that's well worth it. The view opens onto the Merdeka 118 and the southern KLCC skyline, the food is genuinely good, and the price-to-quality ratio is one of the best in town. 4.5 stars.
09Sky Lounge by UCSI Hotels — the sleeper pick
Cheras
Cheras is not where most rooftop guides will send you, which is exactly why this works. Sky Lounge sits on a UCSI Hotels rooftop with a 4.8 rating across 600+ reviews and a view that looks back across the city skyline — KLCC and Merdeka 118 lined up together, no high-rise blocking the shot. Less of a scene, more of a discovery.
10IVY Rooftop Restaurant Bar & Lounge — the highest-rated
Bukit Ceylon
A perfect 5.0 across 240 reviews makes IVY the highest-rated rooftop in our entire KL directory. It's smaller and newer than the famous spots, and the smaller scale is the appeal — careful service, careful drinks, and a genuine point of view rather than another generic hotel terrace. Good for a small group that wants quality over scene.
11Terrasse KL — the hidden gem
Chow Kit · Jalan Yap Ah Shak
Terrasse occupies the rooftop of a restored shophouse on Jalan Yap Ah Shak in Chow Kit. No skyline-photo dominance, no hotel formality — just a smart, plant-heavy terrace with strong cocktails and a 4.7 rating across 130+ reviews. The kind of place you'd walk past without noticing, and then want to return to. Good for a date that doesn't need to impress.
12Rooftop Garden at LaLaport BBCC — the budget pick
Bukit Bintang · LaLaport · Level 4
If you don't want to spend on a hotel rooftop and just want a relaxed open-air spot in the middle of Bukit Bintang, the rooftop at LaLaport BBCC delivers. It's only on the 4th floor — so the view is across rather than down — but the open layout, the surrounding F&B, and the price point make it the right answer for a casual evening. 4.6 stars across 150 reviews.
How to do rooftop bars in KL well
Petronas Towers timing
The Twin Towers light up at sundown (around 7 pm year-round) and the LED display runs in cycles. Aim to be seated 15–20 minutes before for the gradual reveal.
Dress code
Smart casual at the hotel rooftops (SkyBar, Marquis, Cielo). Most KL rooftops won't let you in with shorts, slippers, or sleeveless tops for men. Bangsar and Chow Kit spots are more relaxed.
Weather
Tropical thunderstorms are common in the late afternoon. Almost every rooftop has at least a partial cover, but the prime view seats are exposed. Always check the forecast.
Reservations
Friday and Saturday nights, definitely book — particularly SkyBar, Marquis, and Scarlet's. Weeknights are usually fine for walk-ins.
Cost
Cocktails run RM 35–55 at most rooftops, RM 60+ at the higher-end ones. Significantly cheaper than Singapore, comparable to Bangkok.
Halal options
Many KL rooftops are alcohol-free or have separate alcohol-free menus, in line with local norms. Check before booking if it matters.
